The Morning Rowan Was Born
December 23, 2025
The morning Rowan was born, we were already waiting…
We had expected him on the 22nd. We watched closely, checked on Ella before bed, and told ourselves that maybe it would happen overnight. But as we are learning, nature has her own sense of timing.
December 23rd arrived wrapped in fog. A soft mist settled over Lavender Jolly Acres as the sun slowly rose, warming the pasture just enough to promise a gentle day. It felt like a morning that asked us to slow down and pay attention.
This is our first time raising cattle. We are still learning—reading, observing, and sometimes second-guessing ourselves. We fell in love with the breed for their calm temperament and hardiness, and with the long-term dream of raising our own meat, we knew this moment would come. Even so, knowing something is coming and being truly ready for it are two very different things.
That morning, my husband went out to check on the cows like he always does. When he came back inside, he said almost casually,
“I see hooves.”
It took a moment for the words to register.
And then everything shifted.
Out in the pasture, Ella—our first-time mama—was already doing exactly what she was meant to do. Calm. Focused. Instinctive. It was a perfectly normal, textbook birth—the kind you hope for, especially when you are new to this and your heart is quietly racing anyway.
One of the most striking moments of the morning was the herd itself. In the misty light, our other two cows stood close, surrounding Ella as if standing guard. There was something deeply grounding about witnessing that quiet solidarity—an unspoken understanding among them.
And then he arrived.
A bull calf.
Almost immediately, the geese began trumpeting—loud and unmistakable—as if announcing his arrival to the entire farm. It felt like a welcome. A celebration. A reminder that life here is shared and noticed.
Ella proved herself right away: protective but gentle, steady and attentive. She tended to her calf with a calm confidence that was reassuring to witness.
We named him Rowan.
He is the first calf ever born at Lavender Jolly Acres. The first life to begin on this land under our care. His birth was not dramatic or chaotic. It was peaceful. Grounded. Right.
On a foggy morning that warmed with the rising sun, our farm quietly changed forever.
Welcome to the world, Rowan. 🌾
